Volunteers work to keep Aiken County Beautiful | Local News | postandcourier.com – Charleston Post Courier
Furniture chunks, beverage cans, auto parts and cigarette butts galore were part of Saturday morning’s haul along Aiken’s bypass, as Keep Aiken County Beautiful had dozens of volunteers in action for the organization’s spring cleaning, reaching all the way around the city.
An office chair, a feeding bucket, two rolls of carpet and “large pieces of wood” were part of the haul, helping add up to 44 bags of roadside litter gathered by a corps of 41 volunteers, said Kandace Cave, KACB’s program coordinator.
“A lot of car parts” were part of the mix for volunteer James Harper, who covered the part of Hitchcock Parkway closest to Silver Bluff Road. Harper said his Saturday routine includes picking up roadside trash except in cases of heavy rain or extreme heat.
It’s “my way of giving back to the county,” he said. “I like it here in Aiken, and I used to do it where I lived in Virginia. I tried to keep three county roads pretty clean of trash. It’s a little exercise for me. I like being outside, and there’s just so much on the roadways here … If I can do a little – an hour every Saturday – then it helps.”
